In this blogpost series we will be posting highlights and the YouTube recordings of the monthly FinOps Foundation Virtual Summit series events. Even if you are not a member the public parts of these sessions are available for free on the Foundation’s YouTube channel and they cover a wide range of topics in the field. We will be posting these every month when the YouTube recording becomes available.
FOCUS and FinOps & AI
While the first part of the session was a recap of FinOps X, with one of the highlights of course being the 1.0 launch of the FOCUS standard, there was a lot of interesting information in the sessions about AI for FinOps and FinOps for AI.
Presenters this session were Dhara Kansagara (BetaNXT) sharing how to adopt FOCUS, Shawn Alpay (Envisor) announcing the launch of the FOCUS User Group, Jason Rhoades (Intuit) and Josh Collier (Grammarly) on applying FinOps to GenAI and tips for practitioners on getting started in AI, and Kyle Campos (CTO, CloudBolt, and Governing Board member) on AI for FinOps.
AI For FinOps
Main takeaway from this session for me was the warning that you shouldn’t be doing AI for AI’s sake. Seems logical but it so very easy to get caught up in the hype that you forget to go back to the basics. A simple threshold alert is probably good enough in a lot of cases.
FinOps for AI
The challenge described was that AI models, LLM’s etc. all use a similar sounding unit of measure (UoM) but that the definition of what this UoM means or how it is calculated and how consumption is measured against this UoM differs a lot across different vendors.
